General description of the collection: The James Allen photograph collection consists of excellent portrait photos of many of the Army's important officers as well as his career from the early 1890s, when he was a lieutenant colonel, to his retirement as Chief Signal Officer in 1913. He served in that position beginning in 1906 and this collection shows excellent photos of him during that period. There are excellent portraits of several of his contemporaries: A.W. Greeley, Arthur MacArthur, C.W. Saltzman, George O. Squire, and George P. Scriven.

Adolphus Washington Greely (b. March 27, 1844, Newburyport, Massachusetts-d. October 20, 1935, Washington, D.C.) served throughout the American Civil War and remained in the army at the war's close.
